About Terra Firma

The Farm

The farm sits on 65 acres in Acton, Maine. Bought in 2008 from a trust after a long period of inactivity, it was little more than a washed out road and a neglected hay field. We restored the road, rejuvenated the hay field and acquired livestock locally.

Neighbor Greg Mitchell felled trees and his pair of Belgiums hauled them to George Main’s portable sawmill on the site. We built the two barns with the lumber, fenced the pasture and introduced our starter flock of Romney/Coopworth crosses to the farm.

The Farmers

Dane Giallongo and John Flood are partners in the farm. The farm is run organically keeping to MOFGA standards, and most acreage is used as pasture for the sheep.

Our aim is to return to the land all that is used in growing grass and vegetables. No commercial fertilizers are applied to the pasture or garden. Both are fertilized entirely with our own compost, made from manure and bedding. Organic hay is sourced locally.

Our energy needs are more than met by solar panels on top of our barns.

Our Products

Slow-grown, pasture-raised organic lamb and chicken are raised for sale. Chicken is processed on the farm; lamb is processed at a local butcher shop. It is sold as halves and whole animals and individual cuts. Meat is USDA inspected, vacuum-packed, and frozen.

Our aim is to make use of the entire animal. Lamb skins, yarn, and wool matt are available, and dog bones are free of charge. There are two options for purchasing our products — by delivery to Portland at 192 Brackett Street, or on site at the farm in Acton. Call or email us to inquire about dates and times for pick up.
